Journey: Day trip to Jamalgarhi

Another great day trip is to the Monastery at Jamalgarhi near Mardan. Jamalgarhi, located in the Mardan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, is an important archaeological site with a rich historical legacy, particularly tied to the Gandhara civilization and the Buddhist heritage of the region.

1. We hired a van via our trusted Saeed and took the trip to JamalGarhi. It can also be done in a day from Islamabad

2. The monastery was built on a high ridge, providing a commanding view of the surrounding area. Its location was strategic, situated along ancient trade routes that facilitated cultural and economic exchanges between South Asia and Central Asia. The van is able to drive to the top so there is no need for a walk like we did at Ranigat.

The views from the top of the hill are captivating. One imagines the elevated position symbolized spiritual ascension and was ideal for monastic life focused on meditation and study. It also helped protect it from invaders who often cam by way of the Khyber pass.

The site was rediscovered in the 19th century by British archaeologists, including Sir Alexander Cunningham, during the colonial era. Excavations revealed well-preserved structures and artifacts, including sculptures, inscriptions, and coins that provide valuable insights into the Gandharan civilization.

The complex features typical Gandharan architecture, with stupas, chapels, monastic cells, and assembly halls.

Though not yet a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jamalgarhi has been proposed for inclusion due to its archaeological and historical significance. The site is protected under Pakistan’s Antiquities Act, and efforts have been made to preserve its remnants.

3. Afterwards we ate Chapli kabab at a local shop and then headed home.
